Vasectomy
Vasectomy can be carried out quickly, safely and effectively under local anaesthetic, with a prompt return to normal activities. Pre-operative counselling and follow-up are vital components of the care package to ensure the best outcome for the individual concerned. Vasectomy is the contraceptive method chosen by millions of men who feel that their desire to reproduce is at an end.
This method is not suitable for every man and the doctor at the clinic will discuss whether this is an advisable option depending on personal circumstances. Some men worry that the procedure is painful and that their recovery may be prolonged by discomfort and swelling. This is simply not the experience of the great majority of our patients who return to office work shortly after their operation.
You would be offered a clinic appointment with your surgeon to discuss and agree your treatment plan beforehand. Many patients return to their normal activities the same day.
Four months after the operation, tests are carried out to ensure that fertility has been curtailed. The failure rate for vasectomy is comparable with the oral contraceptive pill (if taken reliably). Vasectomy as a choice of contraception offers couples the security of a highly reliable method without the potential disadvantages of other methods.
If you would like to discuss whether vasectomy is a suitable choice, please arrange an initial consultation with the doctor at The Clinic who will be pleased to talk you through your options. Although there is a charge made for the initial consultation, this is deducted from the cost of any subsequent treatment. You do not need a referral from your doctor but, with your permission, we would normally write to your doctor after the procedure (as a matter of professional courtesy).
