Skin Revitalisation

Intense Pulsed Light

The Lumenis One machine Intense Pulsed Light (IPLTM) technology is a treatment used to improve the appearance of skin showing signs of ageing or sun damage. It specifically targets brown spots, thread veins and fine lines to give a safe, non-invasive solution that can be tailored to your individual needs. The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) shorter wavelengths remove the vascular and pigmented lesions, while the longer wavelength energy is able to rejuvenate the skin.

Skin Revitalisation treats the entire face, rather than a limited area, for an aesthetically pleasing result. In addition, it can be used on the neck, chest and hands. The aim of this treatment is to produce smoother, even-toned and more youthful-looking skin.

Procedure

A cool gel is applied to the area to be treated and you will be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. Patients can request pre-treatment with topical anaesthetic. The IPL hand piece is applied to your skin, and pulses of light are emitted. You may feel a slight sting, like the snapping of a small rubber band, as the hand piece moves over the skin. On average, it takes 30 minutes for a single treatment.

Advantages

Most people can return to work the same day and resume all their normal activities - there is no 'downtime' associated with the treatment, which is in contrast to laser resurfacing. It is a low risk procedure involving minimal discomfort.

Side effects

There may be some redness or swelling after treatment. Very rarely, there may be some blistering or bruising. The face may feel warm or 'tight'. Freckles and age spots may look gritty for a few days. Normally, this settles quickly. After a series of sessions, you should notice a gradual improvement in the condition of your skin.

Treatment programme

Depending on the condition being treated, and its severity, a series of up to five or six treatment sessions may be recommended. By dividing the programme into several treatments, the procedure provides gradual improvement with very low risk. You might like to check out Erbium:Yag Resurfacing also available from the clinic.

Intense Pulsed Light Sources

Laser Light is intense light of a pure wavelength. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a mixture of wavelengths of intense bright light that is blended using special quartz crystals to treat a wide range of skin conditions. All treatments are medically prescribed and monitored using a chosen range of wavelengths of intense pulsed light.

Thermage

The Burghley Park Clinic was the first clinic in the UK to provide the Thermage treatment.

The New Thermage Machine

The Thermage procedure is a non-invasive, no-downtime treatment that aims to deliver tighter skin, renewed facial contours and healthier collagen. At the heart of Thermage is the patented Thermacool TC system - this sophisticated device enables doctors to deliver energy deeper in the skin than conventional laser therapy. Suitability for any patient for the Thermage procedure is decided only after careful consideration of their wishes and expectations. The doctor at The Burghley Park Clinic will help assess the degree of skin laxity and recommend exactly where the thermage procedure could tighten up skin and renew the contours of the face.

Skin is made up of two layers, the visible outer layer called the epidermis, and the deeper layer called the dermis. The main structural component of the dermis is a protein called collagen, which provides the skin its strength. As we age, the body produces less collagen resulting in wrinkles and laxity. The Thermage procedure causes the collagen in the dermal layers of the skin and its underlying tissue to tighten, thereby reducing skin laxity and wrinkles and renewing facial contours.

The Thermage procedure for Skin Tightening uses patented radiofrequency technology to create a precisely controlled zone of heating in the dermis and the underlying tissue. At the same time the epidermis is protected with continual cooling. Heating of the collagen to critical temperatures, initiates a natural biological reaction that causes the collagen to contract and thicken. This process, called denaturation, provides the initial results of tighter, smoother looking skin.

In addition, the body also initiates a second response to heating within the dermis and underlying tissue. This response is part of the body's natural wound-healing response and initiates new collagen creation providing long-term tightening of the skin. The combination of these two processes, provide immediate skin tightening and long-term tightening effects.
